Report
With the aim of sharing with nurses and allied health professionals updated information on the management of critically ill patients with respiratory diseases, the Critical Care Respirology Course (CCRC) was organized in December 2009.
The first meeting in preparation for the event was held on 4 June 2009, when the structure of the course was laid down and work was allocated to members of the organizing committee. In the subsequent six months, teaching materials were prepared, equipments were gathered, sponsors were found, and speakers were invited. The course material and application forms were sent via emails to nurses and allied health professionals both in the public and private sectors. Information was posted on the Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine (HKSCCM) website. Posters were displayed in lift lobbies of the main block of PYNEH. Among 22 participants who responded, 54.5% were informed of the course by their supervisor/ hospital, 36.4% via emails, 18.2% from colleagues/ friends, and 13.6% from the posters displayed. However, none of the 22 respondents knew of the course from the HKSCCM website.
By mid-September, the course was fully booked. Participants came from various departments all over Hong Kong. In view of the enthusiastic response, the number enrolled was increased from an intended 40 to 48.
All 48 participants attended day one of the course and 47 attended day two. Lectures on both days were kept on-time. Both participants and speakers visited the many booths set up by various companies during breaks and free time. Afternoon workshops were delivered to small groups of twelve, which encouraged interactions between speakers and participants. At the workshops, video clips were shown, equipments were displayed and discussed, and ventilators were demonstrated on lung simulators. Participants also had an opportunity to intubate a mannequin and to experience non-invasive ventilation.
The course concluded after certificates of attendance were distributed to participants on day two. Speakers and participants each received a 4GB USB as souvenir, while sponsors and participating companies were presented with a photo taken on day one and a thank you note. A high percentage of evaluation forms were returned (95.8% on day 1 and 81.3% on day 2) and the general response was very favorable. Overall satisfaction score was 4.57 out of 5.
Conclusion
The course was well received with many favorable feedbacks. We are looking forward to the CCRC 2010.
