Adult Intensive Care Unit, Queen Mary Hospital
The Adult Intensive Care Unit of Queen Mary Hospital has been collaborating with the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Pharmacy of Queen Mary Hospital in generating an antibiotic policy for the Intensive Care Unit. This article begins with a background description of the problem of antibiotic resistance in our Unit. That includes a case report of the first local case of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus infection.
To produce data for baseline comparison, we have also prospectively collected some data on the colonization pattern of ICU patients by resistant organisms. The preliminary data will be discussed. Then steps to streamline and audit antibiotics utilization in the ICU will be discussed, that include the regular reporting of antibiotics consumption to the ICU team. Finally the framework of an antibiotic policy, together with ideas on its practical implementation, will be presented.
