Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the Comprehensive Course in VV-ECMO to be held towards the end of this year. The course is jointly organized by the Department of Intensive Care of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and the Hong Kong College of Critical Care Nursing (HKCCCN). This ECMO simulation course has been organized for seven times already and has received excellent comments from majority participants and we also won an award from the Asian Hospital Management Award 2013 this year. This Comprehensive Course is modified as to provide a comprehensive coverage on both theoretical and practical aspects in veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) according to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) recommended curriculum. The course consists of 15 hours of lectures (5 sessions, 3 hours each) and a 7-hour hi-fidelity simulation workshop. The objective of the course is to equip candidates with knowledge and skills to manage the ECMO system and to fulfil the clinical needs of patients on VV ECMO. We have invited experienced doctors and critical care nursing fellows from existing ECMO centres to deliver lectures and trained simulation instructors to conduct hi-fidelity simulation water drills.
VV-ECMO is a life-saving therapy for patients with respiratory failure who failed conventional mechanical ventilation. It has been adopted in Hong Kong since the H1N1 Influenza pandemic in 2009. In order to make such a complicated therapy possible, dedication from a whole team of health care professionals is mandatory.
