The Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) course is designed to teach the diagnosis and management of severe burns in the first 24 hours after injury.
It will teach the concepts of primary and secondary survey and specific areas that you will need to know will include the following:
1. Protection and maintenance of the airway.
2. Removal of constricting clothing and jewellery.
3. Calculation of the correct percentage of burn.
4. Initiation of appropriate intravenous fluid resuscitation.
5. Identification of cases requiring an indwelling urinary catheter.
6. Identification of cases requiring transfer to a burns unit.
7. Assessment of the adequacy of circulation.
8. Description of escharotomy.
9. Identification of the need for fasciotomy in an electrical burn.
10. Correctly conduct a head to toe survey and identify associated injuries.
11. Identify appropriate laboratory tests.
