Workshop 1: Simulation in Critical Care
"We are working in a complex and dynamic clinical environment in which the delivery of appropriate and prompt care to the critically ill depends on the integrated and efficient actions of providers. The use of hi-fidelity clinical simulation system can help us to facilitate the training of critical-care physicians and nurses without having the training process jeopardize the well-being of patients."
- I’ve heard about this medical simulation for more than a decade…..What exactly is it?
- Can I suspend my disbelief and really immense myself into the scenario THIS time?
- Is it supposed to be a heuristic evaluation…….or just kind of….assessment?
If you have the aforementioned questions in your mind then you are cordially invited to join our clinical simulation workshop. Both physicians and nurses working in the ICU/HDUs are welcome. Try to experience the high-fidelity simulation system and case scenario modified from real cases.
Seminar 1: Updates on Mechanical Ventialtion
This seminar will be divided into 3 short lectures (30 minutes) followed by Q&A session (10 minutes).
Part 1: Refining Invasive Ventilatory Strategies
Speaker: Dr CW Lau
This lecture introduces the integration of various respiratory monitoring techniques in refining invasive ventilatory strategies, including the use of esophageal catheters, intratracheal pressure monitoring, neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), use of lung ultrasound in lung recruitment, etc. Equipment in achieving the above will be demonstrated. Old and new ventilatory modes will be visited to explore potential roles in refining our ventilatory strategies, including airway pressure release ventilation (APRV), proportional assist ventilation (PAV), PAV+, etc.
Part 2: Refining Noninvasive Ventilatory Strategies
Speaker: Dr CW Lau and Dr Grace Lam
This lecture introduces the integration of various respiratory monitoring techniques in refining noninvasive ventilation, including the use of NIV-NAVA and various NIV interfaces. Equipments will be demonstrated.
Part 3: Novel endotracheal tube designs and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention
Speaker: Dr Grace Lam
The lecture introduces some novel endotracheal tube design aiming at the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), with a literature review. The novel designs include cuff contour, cuff material, subglottic suction, etc. Equipment will be demonstrated.
Seminar 2: Updates on Neurocritical Care
We have invited renowned intensivists, neurologist and neurosureons to share their experience on controversies in brain death certification, neurosonography, and other topics. It is suitable for all helathcare workers who need to take care of patients with neurological failure.
Seminar 3: Refresher on Cardiological Investigations
Cardiological investigations has been evolving rapidly. Expert cardiologist will refresh us on cardiological investigations, such as echocardiography, ECG and relevant electrophysiolgical studies.
Seminar 4: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
Mechanical circulatory support has evolved markedly over recent years and the adoption of veno-venous ECMO ( ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) in the management of acute respiratory failure in the 2009 H1N1 Influenza pandemic had boosted the interest of this type of mechanical support among intensivists. Despite being a late-starter, ICUs in Hong Kong have some favourable experience in the use of ECMO in salvaging patients with severe respiratory failure during the pandemic.
Beside its potential influence in the management paradigm of severe acute respiratory failure is there any other clinical implications of ECMO in critical care settings? Or can we learn more from the experienced hands across the strait?
In this ECMO seminar we have invited experts from Taipei Veterans General Hospital (台北榮民總醫院) to share with us their experience in mechanical circulatory support and introduce the applications of ECMO in other clinical care settings.
A well organized medical team with rapid response is imperative in disaster. However, how many of us has experience in disaster management? It’s our honour to have invited Dr Jimmy Chan, who is the Chief of Service of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital Accident & Emergency Department, to tell us more.
In addition, senior surgical colleagues and police officers from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Bureau will share their exciting experience with us.
Don’t miss this valuable opportunity. Mark your calendar now!
