2010 Jun 1 – AJRCCM Editorial: More Doctors to the Rescue in the Intensive Care Unit: A Cautionary Note

Jeremy M. Kahn, M.D., and Jesse B. Hall, M.D. American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Vol 181. pp. 1160 -1161, (2010)
At first blush, the idea of 24-hour intensivist physician staffing in the intensive care unit (ICU) must seem to have a strong theoretical rationale.

An extensive body of literature indicates that daytime staffing by intensivists is associated with reduced morbidity and mortality in the ICU (1). It stands to reason that providing access to intensivists at night will further improve safety and quality.
