Message from the organizer
Dear Collegues and Friends:
On behalf of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine (HKCEM), we would like to invite you to join the 9th WINFOCUS World Congress on Ultrasound in Emergency & Critical Care – “Emergency and Critical Care from Blind to Brilliant”, to be held in Hong Kong from 6th to 9th November, 2013.
We are honored to be the co-organizer with WINFOCUS for the 9th WINFOCUS World Congress. HKCEM is one of the 15 colleges within the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Our college was established in the year 1996. In 2006, a group of Emergency physicians interested in Ultrasound formed an Ultrasound Interest Group and started to promote Ultrasound training and practice. A formal Ultrasound Subcommittee was then established in 2007. We are devoted to Ultrasound training and development as we organize different levels of Ultrasound courses every year. Every Accident & Emergency Department in Hong Kong is now equipped with one or more Ultrasound machines, and bedside Pointof-care Ultrasound examination becomes an indispensible part in our daily practice.
Ultrasound is regarded as a visual stethoscope, just like turning a blind people into one with brilliant vision. In the past, we could only imagine the internal organs by various physical examinations such as palpation, percussion and auscultation. With the utilization of Ultrasound, we can now visualize the internal organs directly and make the correct diagnosis right at the bedside, which were impossible in the past. For example, in the management of Pulseless Electrical Activity during resuscitation, we can use Ultrasound to visualize the pneumothorax, acute right heart strain with possible thrombi in right heart, a hard-working heart with hyperdynamic circulation and empty ventricles, or even a small failing heart that is compressed by a thick layer of pericardial fluid. Without Ultrasound, we are very likely to lose these patients as these signs are all very subtle by physical examination, and every second counts during resuscitation.
In 2013 World Congress we are pleased to organize 10 pre-conference Ultrasound courses run by a worldwide cuttingedge Faculty, covering different specialties from paediatric to adult, ABCDE in resuscitation to trauma scenarios, nursing colleagues to specialized Ultrasound trainers. In the conference, apart from the plenary lectures by our most renowned speakers from different parts of the world, we will also run different organ-based and problembased workshops to share our experience and knowledge.
Hong Kong is a very beautiful city and it is regarded as the Pearl of the Orient. You must not miss the wonderful panorama of the Victoria Harbour especially in nighttime. Besides, Hong Kong is also regarded as a shopping paradise as we have an incredible variety of goods from all over the world and most of them are tax-free. I am sure you will enjoy every moment in Hong Kong and I am looking forward to seeing you in Hong Kong.
