2012.03.18 Quiz: Anti-NMDA Receptor Antibody-Associated Encephalitis

Answer: A

Anti-NMDA receptor limbic encephalitis has a female predominance, and it can also be found in male. In female, it is associated with ovarian teratoma. Approximately 50 percent of female patients older than 18 have uni- or bilateral ovarian teratomas, less than 9 percent of girls younger than 14 years have a teratoma. In male, detection of a tumor is rare, but it has been reported to be associated with testicular tumor, germ cell tumor, teratoma of the mediastinum, small cell lung carcinoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and neuroblastoma.
