Date: 6 March 2011

Let’s Join the Walk and Support the Museum!
To celebrate her 15th Anniversary, the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is going to organise a “Medical Heritage Fund-raising Walk” on Sunday, 6 March 2011. You are cordially invited to join the Walk. Please note down the date and bring your friends and family to this very special walk.
The walk is around the Tai Ping Shan Street area. In the 1890s, there was a plague epidemic in Hong Kong and the origin of which was believed to be in the Tai Ping Shan Street area. One of the reasons is the poor hygiene and crowded living conditions in the area. The government responded by mandatory cleaning up of the houses, pulling down some of the buildings and the clearing becomes the Blake Garden of today. A Bacteriolgical Institute was set up which becomes the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences today.
The walk will start at the Museum and cover 16 historic spots in the Taipingshan and Sai Ying Pun Districts. It will include the former ambulance depot, the Water Lane from which people got their drinking water, the original sites in which the British soldier burnt the contaminated furniture, the Kwong Fook I-tsz, etc. There will also be a guided tour to the Ceremonial Hall of the Tung Wah Hospital which is usually closed to the public.
This event is jointly organized by the two University Medical Faculties, the Department of Health, the Hospital Authority, the Hong Kong Medical Association and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.
The Hong Kong Medical Association will organize two teams of 20 people each. Dr. HO Chung Ping will be the docent of one of the teams. Since Dr. HO had done some studies in this area, there will be numerous stories to tell in the tour.
For details please refer to the attached Poster and Enrolment Form. To join the HKMA Team, please contact the HKMA Secretariat at 2527 8285 or tracyguo@hkma.org (Tracy) on or before 23 February 2011. Registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
