(1)   Constitution of HKSCCM

Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine Limited was registered under HKSAR government Company Registries on 17th November 2008.

The one-year membership has been extended into two-year term for every subscription of HKD 200 for ordinary member and HKD 100 for associate/ nursing member. The current term of membership will expire at 31st December 2010. HKSCCM now has 84 members (69 ordinary members and 15 associate/ nursing members)

Office bearer of executive council: Chairman (Dr Yan Wing Wa), Treasurer (Dr Chan Pik Kei Osburga), Hon Secretary (Dr Chan Yan Fat Alfred). The other thirteen council members include Editor-in-chief of HKSCCM website (Dr Lau Chun Wing), HKACCN representative (Mr. Luk Hing Wah) and representatives from 11 ICUs of Hong Kong

 

(2)   HKSCCM website and editorial board of newsletter

The website is being governed by three webmasters: Dr Chan Kin Wai, Dr Chan King Chung, Dr So Sheung On and the Editor-in-chief (Dr Lau Chun Wing). It continues to gain popularity among the field of critical care medicine. Cumulative content hit count had exceeded 500,000 since 3rd November 2010!

The website has been furnished by adding new features. Examples include “Latest addition” which helps readers to rapidly catch the most recently introduced abstracts of journal; “The ten most read articles” which always reminds visitors about the most popular content; “RSS feeds” which can allow any member to quickly link oneself to medical news.

 “Patient page” was constructed where patient education pamphlets and various communication tools are uploaded for public access

Highlights of every council meeting are uploaded on to section of “council meetings—HKSCCM” so to increase transparency and to convey important strategy of society to members.

The proper function of website depends heavily on dedication of editorial board which had been governed by Dr Wong Kwan Keung, the academic advisor; and Dr Lau Chun Wing, the editor-in-chief. Currently there are 18 editors from 12 different hospitals.

 

(3)   Bimonthly inter-hospital grand-rounds

HKSCCM organized six inter-hospital grand-rounds in 2010. Two ICUs presented in each grand-round according to roster. With effect from November 2010, RH joined the roster as well.

The grand-rounds continue to be part of the training program of both the Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) Board of Hong Kong College of Anesthesiologists (HKCA) and the Critical Care Medicine (CCM) Board of Hong Kong College of Physicians. With effect from November 2009, the inter-hospital grand-rounds were approved for Continuous Nursing Education (CNE) point with collaboration by the Hong Kong Association of Critical Care Nurses (HKACCN).

 

(4)   Other academic activities

The following scientific symposia were organized in year 2010:

A. Prolonged Catheter Survival in Patients with Acute Kidney Insufficiency on Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Using a Less Thrombogenic Micro-patterned Polymer Modification; integrated in inter-hospital grand-round on 19th January 2010; sponsored by Gambro

B. Meeting Infection Challenges in the Era of Resistance; on 4th March 2010; sponsored by Janssen

C. Management of MRSA Infection; on 9th March 2010; sponsored by Pfizer

D. Immunomodulation for Critically Ill Patients through Dietary Intervention; on 19th April 2010; sponsored by Fresenius Kabi.

E. Mechanical Ventilation Updates in Critical Care; on 29th April 2010; sponsored by Covidien

F. Use of ICU Outcome Measurement in Quality Improvement; on 6th May 2010; by Prof. Kathy Rowan, Director of Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre, UK; invited by HACOC (ICU)

G. Pain Management & ICU Sedation; on 14th June 2010; co-organized with Hong Kong College of Anesthesiologists; sponsored by Hospira

H. Adjuvants to massive haemorrhage, transfusion and haemostasis; on 22nd July 2010; sponsored by Novo Nordisk

I.   Brain Death and Organ Donation; on 19th October 2010; co-organized with HKACCN; an overseas speaker was invited for HACOC Commissioned Training

 

(5)   Annual Scientific Symposium (ASM)

The symposium was held on 12 December 2010 (Sunday) at Lecture Theatre, G/F, Hong Kong East Cluster Training Centre for Healthcare Management & Clinical Technology, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Chai Wan. The theme is “What’s up: Current Trends in Local ICUs”. The ASM is completely supported by HKSCCM, and registration fee is free to members.

Professor William Clark from Indiana University of Medicine, USA was invited to share with the audience on update in application of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) in field of critical care medicine. Local experts in ICUs delivered lectures covering wide spectrum of issues including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Therapy (ECMO), massive blood transfusion protocol in major trauma, catheter-related blood stream infection and infection control, with special emphasis on local perspectives.

The ASM was very well attended with delegates coming from physicians, nurses and allied health professionals.

 

(6)   Position Statements

With invaluable support from senior ICU clinician and local experts, HKSCCM had released position statements of the following topics:

A. Catheter associated blood stream infection

B. Prevention of thromboembolism in ICU

C. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for critically ill patient

Traditional Chinese version and Simplified Chinese version of the position statement on “Certification of Death Following the Irreversible Cessation of Brainstem Function” were released to public access

Together with Hong Kong Society of Clinical Toxicology (HKSCT), HKSCCM had issued public letter to the Secretary of the Bureau of Food & Health to appeal for setting up a hospital-based centre of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in HK.

 

(7)   Collaboration with overseas professional society

HKSCCM is in official affiliation with Asian Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (APACCM), and Dr HY So is the representation from HK in the executive council.

HKSCCM is an active member of World Federation of Societies of Intensive & Critical Care Medicine (WFICCM)

 

(8)   Critical Care Medicine Foundation (CCMF)

The CCMF had received generous support from different companies in 2010

The CCMF had generated an approved list of local training courses as potential target of subsidy. Two successful applicants were financially supported to attend a local course of clinical toxicology.

The CCMF subsidy policy will be subjected to review annually

CCMF executive committee will be set up in order to facilitate effective workflow

 

(9)   Book Publication

Editorial board was set up since September 2010

Articles originated from true stories in ICU will be collected, edited and modified for purpose of publication. It is hoped that the book can enhance public understanding of critical care, to provide platform of sharing of anything related to ICU, to educate citizens about various diseases and management and to achieve mutual understanding between health care deliver and patients

Preliminary schedule of publication of book will be in third quarter of 2011
