2010.01.22 – Quiz: What is the name of this sign?

D. Chilaiditi’s sign

It is caused by the transposition of a loop of large intestine (usually transverse colon) in between the diaphragm and the liver. Usually this causes no symptoms, but when this sign is associated with symptoms of  abdominal pain, torsion of the bowel (volvulus) or shortness of breath, we call it Chilaiditi syndrome.

The following CT’s belong to the same patient, and were done for indications other than bowel/gas under diaphragm. They show the Chilaiditi’s sign better.
