Highlights
By Dr TANG Kam Shing, TMH, published 26 March 2009, Brussels, Belgium – Timing of tracheostomy has always been a controversial issue in ICU. Two studies were presented in 29th ISICEM on this issue. Both were randomized multi-centre trials comparing early tracehostomy (3-4 days) to around 10-12 days. The first is an Italian study and the other is a British study. Both showed no change in mortality comparing early to late tracheostomy.

By Dr LAM Sin Man Grace, PYNEH, published 27 March 2009, Brussels, Belgium – A Note from Brussels: The past three days in Brussels all started with a drizzle, as if to clear our minds in preparation for the full day ahead of us. The weather was not much of a bother though, as participants of the 29th International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine spent most of their time inside the Brussels Exhibition and Convention Centre engrossed in enlightening talks by renowned speakers from around the world: we were the first audience to hear the results of the NICE-SUGAR study, which demonstrated a significantly higher mortality in the intensive glucose control group; we listened to results of the RENAL study, which turned out to be a negative trial; we heard the report of the round table conference on ICU-acquired weakness, which called for early mobilization of our patients in the ICU; we learnt from experts "tricks" to deal with everyday problems in the ICU like patient-ventilator asynchrony and delirium, which we are eager to put into practice…Equipped with these new armamentaria, Brussels has indeed promised us luck in the coming year even before we touched the bronze arm of Everard’t Serclaes.
