Course Overview and Objectives

Diseases of the respiratory system are very important components of Critical Care Medicine. Nurses and allied health professionals working both inside and outside of the Intensive Care Unit will encounter patients with acute respiratory conditions. This course will lead you through common respiratory problems and emergencies with 6 lectures and 9 hands-on workshops.

At the completion of this course, you will:
1. Have an understanding of pulmonary anatomy and physiology;
2. Understand and interpret respiratory investigations, including chest X-rays and blood gas;
3. Know in greater depths the principles of oxygen therapy and airway management;
4. Learn how to set up and utilize non-invasive and invasive ventilation, monitor and take care of ventilated patients;
5. Learn in greater details the management of common acute respiratory diseases including asthma, COPD, ARDS, pneumonia and acute pulmonary edema;
6. Learn how to care for patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation.

The faculty has extensive working and teaching experience in critical care medicine, respiratory medicine, as well as anaesthesiology. Since the 1st CCRC in December 2009, this course has been held regularly and has received very favourable feedbacks. See past courses here: CCRC1CCRC2.
